The Elkhorn Resort, Spa & Conference Centre has a long and distinguished history in Manitoba.
Below you will discover how it all began.
Harry Linton of Saskatchewan rents farm land on the present grounds of the Elkhorn Resort. Ted Dudman works on the farm with his family until 1950.
The land is purchased by Ainsley Macey.
The land is purchased by Greg Gregorson of Fargo, North Dakota. Gregorson builds a family cottage on Wasagaming Drive and buys the Mooswa Resort and Fireside Inn. Gregorson's passion for horses leads to the construction of the Elkhorn Ranch.
The doors to the Elkhorn Resort officially open.
Harold and Dorothy Stiles relocate their horse-riding ranch from Riding Mountain National Park to the lower pastures of the present day Resort grounds.
Lorne and Ruth Aikens become the new Resort management team. Within six months, the Aikens purchase the Ranch and begin the task of developing a year-round, nationally recognized resort and conference centre. Construction soon begins on the original 22-room hotel, 80-seat dining room, cocktail lounge and combined TV reading room. It quickly becomes a family dream vacation destination. The large outdoor pool and nine hole par-three golf course are huge attractions. The Resort employs a variety of talented local people.
Eight chalets are built and guest accommodations double.
The original farmhouse is sold to Doug Kelly.
The popularity of cross-country skiing on the many groomed trails in Riding Mountain National Park and downhill skiing at Mount Agassiz inspire guests to visit year-round. During the 10-year tenure of the Aikens family, many improvements and upgrades are made.
Paul Albrechtsen and Herb LaGrange search for a location to develop a vacation destination and soon purchase the property. Albrechtsen and LaGrange build a second bay of four chalets, enlarge the group meeting space, create a new lobby, build a new dining room, a General Manager's residence and increased the number of guest rooms to 51.
The Sarna family move to Onanole and develop a timeshare business for the Resort's chalet properties.
Paul Albrechtsen becomes the exclusive owner of the Elkhorn Resort.
Len and Sylvia Boles become managers of the horse riding ranch. They offer guests trail rides, hayrides, stagecoach rides, sleigh rides, cutter rides, bobsled rides and bonfires. Pet beds and breakfasts are provided.
A third bay consisting of five chalets is constructed.
Len and Sylvia buy the horse riding ranch and rename it the Triangle Ranch.
The Sarna family partner with Gary Buckley and purchase the Elkhorn Resort. They offer guest services, build a Spa and a new bay of chalets. The Elkhorn Resort becomes the highest rated vacation property in Manitoba and earns a Canada Select 4-star rating.
The Triangle Ranch becomes Elkhorn Riding Adventures. The new equestrian facility features state-of-the-art stables and a riding arena. Guests are offered trail rides and equine training.
Now employing between 80 and 100 talented team members, the Elkhorn Resort, Spa & Conference Centre is proud to be a long-standing member of the Onanole/Wasagaming community.
The newly renovated Mountain Grill Dining Room & Bar opened for the public in April.
